The Director, Engineering is a critical role in our Engineering organization. We are unique and afford leaders the opportunity to lead in an integrated environment, working closely with Product Management on the product vision, Design for discovery and user experience, as well as Engineering for delivery and implementation.   


This position requires a strategic technical leader committed to finding and delivering against our internal application teams and our customers' unmet needs across a wide variety of core services powering our Human Capital Management (HCM) solutions. This role will enable a culture of innovation and ownership across all of Engineering – ensuring the teams are entrepreneurial and self-sufficient while still focused on a shared vision.

  • Demonstrates a high level of accountability and instills accountability into the teams you lead 
  • Can interact with all levels of the organization (Executive to Individual Contributors) and understands how to effectively communicate with the respective audience  

During the first six months, you will: 

  • Lead functional area through the development of new products, solutions, and processes 
  • Oversee functional resource allocation setting and delivering against fiscal year objectives 
  • Coach and mentor managers and future leaders 
  • Identify and lead process improvements within assigned function or across product & tech  
  • Establish strategy for one domain area 
  • Participate with other senior managers/leaders to establish and implement cross-functional strategic plans and?objectives? 
  • Make decisions that impact the management and direction of assigned function and affect short-term functional revenue 
  • Plan business strategy/ objectives?6-12 months out, while setting directional strategy 1-3 years out  
  • Lead major initiatives through delivery and the ability to run them (operational excellence)  
  • Be looked to as a model for balancing product/business and engineering concerns designed to scale with Paylocity’s growth while influencing Paylocity’s technical direction 

Required Experience:  

  • Minimum 10 years' work experience with technology company and a minimum experience of 5 years+ as a people manager 
  • Expert Communicator - both written and verbal, with all levels of the organization (Executive to Individual Contributor) and adjust approach accordingly  
  • Able to effectively present information, gain feedback and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.  
  • Harmony, intensity and passion are necessary to blend with the rest of the management team. 
  • Compelling leadership style that includes extraordinary people and program management skills, business and technology expertise with a style that inspires and shows confidence. 
  • Hands-on knowledge of Agile engineering practices  
  • Possess a blend of business to have a big-picture vision as well as the drive and attention to detail that transforms strategy into action 
  • Proven experience operating in a matrix environment where authority is shared with business and product leaders. 
  • Experience with Software Platforms, Consumer products, mobile & web development with a user base of 10 million+ users
